Las Caras
Las Caras explores the blurred boundaries between the tangible and the abstract, where human-like forms emerge from shadow and fade into obscurity. Each figure, rendered in shades of black, hovers between presence and absence, evoking a quiet tension that asks the viewer to contemplate the space between thought and reality. These surreal shapes, stripped of color, reflect the fragility of identity and the fleeting nature of human experience, as though they are echoes reverberating in a silent, forgotten void.
In this series, the absence of noise heightens the sense of isolation and introspection, inviting a deep connection with the unseen forces that shape existence. The figures, distorted yet hauntingly familiar, resist definition, allowing the mind to wander through layers of meaning and ambiguity.
Artist's Statement
Las Caras is not just a series of paintings, it is the pieces making up my soul. I remember the first time I truly meditated and my mind took me to places unknown. I walked down a spiraling concrete staircase and out through a door into a field of lush, tall grass, with a sparkling river flowing through and calla lilies growing in every direction. I was alone, barefoot, the sun's warmth emulating complete contentment and peace. At the far side of this valley was a white gazebo and inside was a tall, lanky man. His face showed no emotion, his presence was pure tranquility. I sat by his side and asked him questions. He never said a word to me, yet I found all of my answers being "planted" into my heart. He was me, and he was everyone who had been. I came out of the meditation and I cried. It was a cry of release and joy. I closed my eyes and began to draw his face. He was browned from years in the sun. He wore a straw hat and held a pitchfork. This was not the man I had met, yet it was him. Every time I sit down to begin a new piece I see his face and feel his energy pulsing through me. These ideas are not mine. I am a vessel for those who have lived before me. I am a vessel for creation.
